James J. Johnson is a professional actor (and as of late, playwright, screenwriter and educator) with experience in stage, film, television and voice-overs. He currently resides in the Washington, DC Metro Area, with his wife, Sonal.
He has appeared with many theatre companies across the region, including the African-Continuum Theatre Co., Arena Stage, Olney Theatre Center, Woolly Mammoth Theatre, Ford's Theatre, Theater J, Rep Stage, Kennedy Center, 1st Stage and Imagination Stage.
J. J., as he is known to family and friends, received his B.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University, in 1997, graduating magna cum laude. He worked as a teaching artist during the summer of 1997 at Legacy Global Youth Village, in Bedford, VA.
He currently works as a teaching artist with BodyWise Dance. Since the Pandemic, he has been teaching "Intro to Acting" with DC's Theatre Lab, and even taught a semester of "Hip-Hop Theatre" at Bowie State University.
A fervent believer in networking and "passing it on," J. J. is a co-founder of Galvanize, a local support network for Black theatre artists.
